Application of C-LIGHT PON STICK optical module series products in PON network

Posted on:September 4, 2024 by C-LIGHT

PON Network (Passive Optical Network) compared to other common point-to-point data communication network, which is a low-cost oriented point-to-multipoint network application. This point-to-multipoint optical communication application has the advantages of lower cost, higher fiber utilization, higher bandwidth, higher security, better operation and management, Convenient and easier to expand and upgrade in the later period. Today, the PON network has come to a wide range of 10g rate applications. More PON networking schemes are selected by big data acquisition, industrial Internet, 5G base station data forwarding and other application fields.

The PON network structure and composition include OLT (Optical Line Terminal), ONT (Optical Network Terminal, called ONT in the ITU-T system, called ONU - Optical Network Unit in the IEEE system), ODN (Optical Distribution Network). The working characteristics of the OLT equipment are that the uplink Ethernet data communication network adopts continuous mode for downstream data transmission and burst mode for downstream reception; the ONT equipment adopts continuous reception mode and burst mode for transmission. C-LIGHT's OLT STICK SFP and ONT STICK SFP products are a special miniaturized "mini" version of OLT and ONT switching equipment.

Application features

Traditional OLT equipment uses frame-type switching equipment and ONT uses commercial design of optical modem boxes. Although these product designs are powerful, they also have some inherent shortcomings. C-LIGHT's PON STICK SFP series products make up for these shortcomings and effectively broaden the application scenarios of PON networks.

C-LIGHT's OLT STICK and ONT STICK SFP series products also support ITU-T G984.1/2/3/4 ITU-TG.987.2 ITU-TG.9807.1/2 ITU-TG.988 IEEE 1588V2 IEEE802.1ag and other application protocols, support MAC/ SN management, with low latency and support SFP compatible access to various Ethernet switches, routers, servers and other Ethernet terminals with SFP optical ports. Compared with traditional OLT equipment connected to Ethernet and ONT using wifi or network cable to transfer Ethernet devices, C-LIGHT's STICK SFP series products can directly use the "golden finger" of the MSA SFF8472 standard protocol to connect to the corresponding Ethernet optical port equipment, realize the direct interconnection between the PON network and the Ethernet network, and can also form a small point-to-multipoint network interconnection within the Ethernet network. It is very suitable for 5G base station data fronthaul, various small data collection and reporting in the industrial Internet, monitoring network video collection, etc.

Traditional equipment is relatively large in size. OLT equipment is generally larger than 1U. There is no standard for ONT size, and it is generally larger than 10x10cm excluding the power supply.

C-LIGHT's OLT ONT STICK SFP optical module complies with the MSA SFP protocol specification size, with a length, width and height of 85.5x13.7x8.5mm and a weight of 40g/piece.

Traditional equipment requires an external power supply, the specifications are limited by country and region, and the power supply is large.

C-LIGHT's OLT ONT STICK SFP optical module does not require an external power supply and is directly powered by the SFP+ optical port that meets the MSA SFF8472 standard protocol.

Traditional OLT ONT equipment has high cost and high transportation cost. It is not economical and practical in some small-scale point-to-multipoint application environments.

C-LIGHT's OLT ONT STICK SFP optical module has low cost. Due to its low volume and weight, the transportation cost is also very cheap, which is suitable for efficient express delivery. It is very competitive in some application scenarios that only require 1:16 and 1:32 PON networks.

The equipment has high maintenance requirements and is generally commercial-grade products, which are difficult to use under industrial-grade high-temperature conditions.

Due to chip selection support and metal + efficient heat dissipation design, C-LIGHT's OLT ONT STICK SFP optical module can support industrial-grade applications.

Answers to common questions about PON STICK SFP optical module product

Will the transmission signal of the product be worse than that of the traditional OLT ONT equipment, and will the transmission distance be affected?

No. Because the product uses the same type of laser optical path design, driver circuit design, switching protocol processor chip. The requirements will not be reduced in terms of the communication performance of the product.

What types of Ethernet devices can product access?

Technically, devices that comply with the Ethernet SFP optical port protocol can access the PON network through our products. International mainstream Ethernet switches and routers can also be used normally and compatibly.

Can product customize and develop some management interfaces and functions suitable for its own brand of switching equipment?

Yes. Because the management chip supports open design, equipment manufacturers and application manufacturers in the industry are welcome to develop with us.

Can transmitting power and receiving sensitivity of the product be customized?

Yes. Within the allowable range of specifications, it can be customized when the business conditions are met.

We are not familiar with the product application. Can we have technical support to help us complete the on-site construction and configuration?

Yes. Our PON network technical support engineers are very familiar with the configuration of various brands of switches and PON equipment.
